Welcome to 12th grade IB Art with Ms. Cat. Here is my email: cbrooks@lapazschool.org
First, a little bit about me:
I moved to Costa Rica from New Mexico in the United States specifically to work at La Paz. I've been teaching art K-8 for over 13 years and have taught many workshops, after school programs, and museum classes for students. It's my first time teaching IB, so we will be learning together. I look forward to working with you this year.
Week of August 29th- September 2nd
This week you will present and discuss the homework you were given by Miss Lizzie to complete over the summer break. I will be checking progress on your visual journals and Comparative Study. You will look at your own artistic practice and thinking and set some goals for the trimester. What are your strengths? What are your areas of need?
Question for the week: What does it mean to be artistically literate?
August 30th- First day
Some of you shared your Google doc files with me already. The rest of you know what to do. Tomorrow we will begin a media investigation with charcoal to create a page in your visual journals.
Homework: Bring a close-up photo of yourself or another person to work with. It can be on your phone. An image showing value contrast (lights and darks) would be best. We will also be working on a still life. Can you bring an old shoe, a broken toy, bones or something from nature that we can use to draw?
September 2- Larger charcoal portrait. Look at work by Chuck Close.
Homework: Bring in objects for still life. Research into the Comparative Study. Choose 3 artists from your genre. Be ready to share 2 examples from each artist (you can share on your computer, by sending me a Google file, or email the images to yourself and we can open them on my computer in class)
September 6- Comparing 3 artists:
Hermen Steenwyck, Still Life; An Allegory of the Vanitas of Human Life; Audrey Flack- World War II (Vanitas) and Damian Hirst- For the Love of God
Week of September 12-17- Creating the group Comparative Study of the still life artists as an exemplar, sharing other artists/genres for the Comparative Study and to use for Visual Journal pages (Swan, Josh, Chloe, and Zelenia)
Homework: due Wednesday 09/14: 11 slides for the Process Portfolio if you have not already turned them in due Wednesday 09/14: info for comparative study on your assigned artist/artwork due Friday 09/16: completed large paper portrait, completed large still life - With both artworks please complete a Visual Journal page of notes including: - Why did you choose the subject you chose? Why did you choose the composition you chose? Write about your experimentation with charcoal and/or pastel. Write about still life and/or portraiture. Use the following vocabulary to reflect upon your work: composition, proportion, perspective, value, contrast, toning the paper, shading, line of symmetry, form (making objects look three-dimensional)
due Wednesday 09/14 Comparative Study artist assignments:
Hermen Steenwyck: Still Life: An Allegory of the Vanitas of Human Life ( Denis, Zelenia)
Audrey Flack WWII Vanitas (Sophia, Josh)
Damian Hirst: For the Love of God (Cloe, Swan)
Class discussion: What do people make art about? Here are some themes you came up with: perception (self, perception of others, the perception others have of us), freedom vs. control, the government, emotions and how we react to them, the environment, power, gender spectrum, life cycles, organized religion, spirituality, the occult, pop culture, drug culture, addictions, genetic mutations, music, social norms, how we influence others, how society influences us, STD's, history, family
Color Theory: abstract pieces: working with value, monochromatic, complementary colors and analogous colors
Identify a theme you want to work with:
1. Draw several large, simple, basic shapes to represent this theme all over your paper. Maybe some shapes are leaving the paper. Maybe some shapes are repeating. Use the whole space of your paper to create an interesting composition. Divide your paper with 5-10 lines, crossing the shapes. Paint 2/3 of the paper with tints and shades of 1 color. Paint the remaining 1/3 with tints and shades of the complementary color. Add details with an accent color over the top.
Assignment Due Wednesday October 12th Spend 10-15 minutes writing about the theme you are investigating. This activity could be used for your process portfolio.
You can write about your theme and project planning stream of consciousness style or make an idea web or answer the following questions:
1. What does this theme mean to you personally?
2. How has your idea developed so far?
3. Brainstorm as many ideas as you can think of about where you might want to go with this theme. What sub-themes will you explore?
4. What will your next 2 projects be? Do you want to continue with painting? If not, what media will you use?
